Lab Grown Sapphire

Lab grown sapphires combine the timeless elegance of one of history’s most treasured gemstones with the innovation of modern craftsmanship. Loved for their deep, captivating hue and exceptional durability, they bring both beauty and meaning to fine jewellery — without compromise.

Lab Grown Sapphire

What are lab grown sapphires?

Lab grown sapphires are real sapphires — chemically, physically, and optically identical to those mined from the earth. Composed of pure corundum (aluminium oxide) with trace elements that create their vivid blue tones, they share the same hardness, brilliance, and durability as natural sapphires.

As one of the world’s “Big Three” precious coloured gemstones — alongside emeralds and rubies — natural sapphires have been treasured for centuries, adorning royal crowns, engagement rings, and heirloom jewellery. Our lab-grown sapphires capture that same enduring beauty, but are created in a controlled environment without the environmental impact of mining. The only difference is their origin — never their radiance or quality.

  • Timeless beauty

From engagement rings to heirloom-inspired designs, sapphires have been cherished for centuries as a symbol of loyalty, truth, and wisdom.

  • Durability to depend on

With a Mohs hardness of 9, sapphires are one of the hardest gemstones, making them ideal for everyday wear.

  • Conscious and sustainable

Lab-grown sapphires offer all the beauty of mined stones without the environmental impact of mining, giving you a gemstone you can wear with pride.

Why Choose Lab Grown Sapphires?

A modern classic in royal blue

The 4Cs of Keanis lab grown sapphires

Our lab-grown sapphires are chosen with the same care and precision as our finest diamonds. Guided by our own interpretation of the 4Cs — Colour, Clarity, Craft, and Confidence — we ensure every stone meets our exacting standards, so you can treasure it for a lifetime.

01 colour

The royal standard

We exclusively select sapphires in the most sought-after Royal Blue tone — renowned for its perfect balance of depth and vibrancy — ensuring a colour that remains timeless and universally flattering.

02 Clarity

Pure and luminous

Chosen for their exceptional clarity, our sapphires are free from the heavy inclusions often found in mined stones, allowing their beauty to shine without distraction.

03 Craft

Uncompromised excellence

We never use low-cost production methods like flame fusion. Instead, we work with advanced techniques to create gemstones of outstanding quality — virtually indistinguishable to the naked eye from the finest natural sapphires.

04 Confidence

Certified and exceptional

Every Keanis lab-grown sapphire is accompanied by an independent IGI report — a level of certification rarely offered for lab grown sapphires in the market. This report confirms our stone’s authenticity and quality, giving you complete peace of mind. As the only UK retailer offering IGI-certified lab grown sapphires, we’re proud to bring you transparency and trust in every piece.

More about lab grown sapphires

  • Royal Blue is considered the most desirable colour grade for blue sapphires. Defined by its deep yet vivid tone, it balances richness and brightness without being too dark or too pale. This saturated, velvety hue has long been associated with royalty and prestige, making it one of the most sought-after shades in fine jewellery. At Keanis, we select only Royal Blue lab sapphires for their timeless elegance and universal appeal.

  • Yes. While blue is the most iconic, sapphires actually come in a rainbow of shades. Blue sapphire and ruby are both varieties of the corundum family — the red variety is called ruby, while all other colours fall under sapphire. These include pink, yellow, green, orange, and the highly prized peachy-pink Padparadscha sapphire.

At Keanis, we occasionally feature non-blue sapphires in our Ready-to-Wear collection. If you’re drawn to a specific colour, simply reach out — our team will be happy to help source a stone and set it in one of our existing designs.

  • No. Lab-grown sapphires are colour-stable, meaning their rich hue is permanent and won’t fade with everyday wear. Unlike some treated or synthetic stones, Keanis lab sapphires retain their brilliance and tone over time — ensuring your jewellery remains just as radiant as the day you received it.

  • No — all our lab-grown sapphires are free from clarity enhancements, such as heat or fracture filling. We hand-select each sapphire in its natural lab-grown state, chosen for its brilliant colour and high clarity. The result is a gemstone that looks beautifully natural, yet meets our modern standards for quality and refinement.

  • Carat is a measure of weight, not size — and different gemstones have different densities. This means that two stones with the same dimensions may have very different carat weights depending on the material. That’s why at Keanis, we list dimensions for coloured gemstones, as this provides a more helpful and visual guide to how the stone will look when worn.

  • Gemstones are often cut with greater depth — particularly in the pavilion, or lower half — to enhance their colour. Unlike diamonds, where brilliance is the primary goal, coloured gemstones rely on body colour for beauty. A slightly deeper cut allows light to interact with the stone in a way that intensifies and enriches the hue, giving your gemstone a more vivid and captivating appearance.

  • Lab-grown diamonds are typically laser-inscribed with their IGI report number along the girdle for traceability and assurance. However, coloured gemstones — such as emeralds, sapphires, and rubies — are rarely inscribed, as the process is more delicate and not commonly applied.

If you'd like to confirm the stone, it's common practice to cross-check that the stone's specifications match the details listed on the certificate.

  • Lab-grown sapphires share the same physical and chemical properties as their natural counterparts — including a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale — making them one of the most durable gemstones after diamonds. This means they’re highly resistant to scratching and well-suited for everyday jewellery like engagement rings.

To preserve their beauty, we recommend cleaning your sapphire occasionally with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners, especially if your piece contains multiple stone types. With the right care, your sapphire will continue to shine just as brightly over time.
